We've only put the first year on the list below. This list shows the actor that won the best performance for lead actor Oscar award as well as the year the actor won the award.

Several actors have been nominated 5 times by the Academy for the lead actor Oscar including Al Pacino, Fredric March, Gary Cooper, Gregory Peck, James Stewart, Robert De Niro, and Tom Hanks. Richard Burton and Paul Muni were nominated 6 times. Dustin Hoffman, Jack Lemmon, Marlon Brando, and Peter O'Toole (who never won) were all nominated 7 times. Paul Newman was nominated 8 times with one win. Jack Nicholson 8 times with two wins. Laurence Olivier was nominated 9 times with one win. Spencer Tracy was nominated 9 times with two wins. No actor has won the lead actor Academy Award more than twice.
