HealthInsurance

Health insurance, similar to dental insurance, is coverage for individuals to protect them against medical costs. There are all sorts of medical insurance plans.

Many people get thier dental insurance through their employer and have little to no choice in the insurance company they use, however, some people do have choice in medical plans between HMOs or PPO's or other options.

Some people choose to go with a high deductable type of medical insurance with no co-pays. This insurance may have a $2000 or more deductable, but has lower premiums and protects the insured against large medical expenses in case of a major illness or injury. Other people choose to go with an HMO type plan where most everything is covered except for co-pays on doctor's visits, hospital stays, and prescriptions. The drawback to some HMO plans is that you often have to go to specific doctors or hospitals that are "in-plan". This may not include your current doctor. Also, the health insurance company may want you get pre-approved for specialists visits or procedures. They may not approve some visits, medicines, or procedures. There are lots of other options with health insurance. Some plans allow you to go to any doctor, but the only pay a certain percentage of the medical cost.

People who don't get their health insurance through their employer can go out and find the best rate available. In this case their age, gender, and past medical history may be some of the factors that are used by the health insurance company to determine the rate.

The tax issues behind health insurance premiums can be confusing and can change from year to year. Most coverage through an employer is not taxed, but the self-employed may not be able to deduct their premium depending on a number of factors and should discuss this with their accountant or financial advisor.

Be sure to understand your health insurance coverage before any procedure or surgery. What is and isn't covered by health insurance can be extremely complex. It is always a good idea to get the exact coverage in writing from your health insurance company prior to any medical procedure.. Be sure to ask your doctor or medical insurance company any questions you have and don't be afraid to ask again if you don't understand.
